Phosphatidylserine (PS) is a phospholipid that is a key component of cell membranes, particularly concentrated in the brain. It is one of very few supplements with an FDA-qualified health claim, stating that it "may reduce the risk of cognitive dysfunction in the elderly." Clinical studies have shown benefits for memory, attention, and processing speed in older adults. In athletes, phosphatidylserine has been studied for its ability to blunt cortisol response during intense training. Modern supplements are derived from soy or sunflower lecithin (earlier products used bovine brain). Typical doses range from 100–300mg per day.
