CoQ10 (Coenzyme Q10, also called ubiquinone) is a compound essential for mitochondrial energy production, found in every cell in the body. It plays a dual role as an electron carrier in the ATP synthesis chain and as a fat-soluble antioxidant. CoQ10 levels decline with age and are further depleted by statin medications. Ubiquinone is the oxidized form — the body converts it to ubiquinol (the active, reduced form) as needed. Ubiquinone supplements are generally less expensive than ubiquinol but may be less bioavailable in older adults.
