L-Lysine is an essential amino acid that your body can't make on its own. Most people get enough from diet (meat, dairy, legumes), so deficiency is uncommon. The main reason people supplement it is for cold sore (herpes simplex) prevention. The evidence for that use is mixed. Some studies show lysine at 1-3g/day reduces the frequency of outbreaks; others find no effect. A Cochrane review found the overall evidence is limited and mostly low-quality. Lower doses under 1g/day don't appear to do much unless combined with reducing arginine-rich foods in the diet. Higher doses (3g/day) have more consistent results in smaller trials. Lysine is also marketed for anxiety, calcium absorption, and wound healing — these uses have weak or no research backing. If you have a history of cold sores and want to try it, 1g/day is the common starting point, with some protocols going higher during active outbreaks.
