Hyaluronic Acid, ranked by real cost

Hyaluronic acid (HA) is a glycosaminoglycan naturally present in skin, joints, and connective tissues. Topical and injectable forms are well-established in dermatology and orthopedics; oral supplementation is newer but the evidence has strengthened in recent years. A 2025 meta-analysis of 7 RCTs showed statistically significant improvements in skin hydration, elasticity, and wrinkle depth from oral HA. Individual RCTs at 120mg/day for 12 weeks have consistently shown improved stratum corneum water content and reduced wrinkle volume. For knee osteoarthritis, reviews covering 11 trials at 80-200mg/day show meaningful pain reductions after 2-3 months of consistent use. Mechanistically the story is counterintuitive: a 2025 tracer study found only about 0.2% of oral HA enters systemic circulation intact, with most degraded by gut microbiota into smaller fragments. This suggests the benefits work through systemic signaling mechanisms rather than direct deposition of HA into skin or joints, which makes the observed clinical effects all the more interesting. Research doses cluster at 120-240mg/day for skin benefits and 80-200mg/day for joints. Molecular weight varies by product, but dose is the stronger predictor of effect. This comparison is specifically for oral supplementation — serums, creams, fillers, and topical products are excluded.
