Alpha-lipoic acid (ALA) is a compound your body produces naturally in small amounts. It acts as an antioxidant in both water and fat, which is unusual — most antioxidants work in one or the other. Most ALA supplements are a 50/50 blend of two forms: the natural R-form and a synthetic S-form. This blend is what's been used in most clinical studies, including major trials on nerve health and blood sugar support. ALA is commonly taken for blood sugar management, nerve health, and general antioxidant support. Typical doses range from 300–600mg per day. It's available mainly as capsules. Some products add benfotiamine or biotin — those blends are excluded from our rankings to keep the comparison focused on ALA alone.
