Astaxanthin is a carotenoid pigment produced by the microalga Haematococcus pluvialis — the same compound that gives salmon, shrimp, and krill their color. It is one of the more well-studied antioxidant supplements, with dozens of human trials examining skin health, cholesterol, and inflammation. The strongest evidence is for skin benefits, where multiple studies show improvements in moisture, elasticity, and sun resilience at typical doses. Effects on lipid profiles and oxidative stress markers are smaller but consistent across studies. Nearly all clinical research uses natural astaxanthin from microalgae — synthetic astaxanthin, made from petrochemicals, is not approved for direct human consumption in most markets.
