Astaxanthin is a carotenoid pigment produced by the microalgae Haematococcus pluvialis, responsible for the red-pink color of salmon, shrimp, and flamingos. It is considered one of the most potent natural antioxidants, with singlet oxygen quenching capacity measured at 6000x that of vitamin C. Clinical studies have demonstrated benefits for skin elasticity and UV protection, eye health (reduced eye fatigue), and exercise recovery. Most supplements use Haematococcus pluvialis-derived astaxanthin, with AstaZine and AstaReal being the most recognized branded forms.
