The most expensive is Etta Vita Sugar-Free Creatine Monohydrate Gummies (5g Per Packet) - P… at $34.95 per month — a 11.7× premium. Most of that premium comes from form (capsules vs. powder), added ingredients, and branding, not from better creatine.
Monohydrate is the form to buy. Creatine HCl, kre-alkalyn, ethyl ester, and buffered creatines cost more per gram and show no clinical advantage over monohydrate in head-to-head trials. Some perform worse in bioavailability studies. Unless you have a specific digestive issue with monohydrate — uncommon — paying a premium for an alternative form is a win for the brand's margin, not for your results.
Cheaper is usually fine. This is one of the most well-established supplements on the market. The creatine itself is doing the work, and pure creatine monohydrate is a commodity ingredient. A no-name brand at $10 and a premium brand at $40 are, in most cases, selling you the same molecule. Choose based on price and your preferred form (powder vs. capsules). Pay extra only if you have a specific reason — third-party testing, Creapure certification, a brand you've verified.
Skip products loaded with extra ingredients. Many creatine products are blended with BCAAs, electrolytes, nootropics, or proprietary "performance" complexes. These exist to justify a price premium, not to improve results. The creatine is doing the heavy lifting; the add-ins rarely deliver measurable benefit at the doses included, and they obscure what you're actually paying for. If you want electrolytes or BCAAs, buy them separately — you'll pay less and know exactly what you're getting.
Powder beats capsules on cost. A 5g daily dose in capsule form typically means 8–10 capsules per day. You pay a substantial premium for that packaging. A bulk tub of unflavored powder is the most cost-efficient format by a wide margin. Capsules make sense if you travel frequently or genuinely won't take powder consistently — convenience has real value if it keeps you compliant.
Creapure® is a useful quality signal, not a requirement. Creapure is a branded German-manufactured monohydrate with independent purity certification (>99.9% creatine, undetectable dicyandiamide and dihydrotriazine). Clinical trials predominantly use it. It's a reliable purity floor when you're unsure about a brand's supply chain — but plenty of non-Creapure products are also clean. If a brand discloses third-party testing results, that's equivalent reassurance.
Third-party testing matters if you're drug-tested. Look for NSF Certified for Sport, Informed Sport, or equivalent third-party purity verification.
You may have seen advice to drink creatine immediately after mixing because it "breaks down" in water. That advice is outdated for plain creatine monohydrate in plain water.
Creatine does slowly convert to creatinine (an inactive byproduct) in solution, but the rate depends on pH and temperature. In plain water at room temperature (neutral pH), degradation over several hours is negligible. You can mix creatine in the morning and drink it later in the day without meaningful loss. The original concern came from acidic formulations — effervescent creatine and creatine mixed into acidic drinks like orange juice — where degradation is genuinely faster.
Practical version: mix with plain water or a non-acidic drink, and consume within the same day. No need to chug immediately.
Stomach acid doesn't degrade creatine either. Below pH 2.5 (stomach conditions), less than 1% converts during digestion.
The evidence base for creatine's effect on strength and power output is as strong as any supplement on the market. A standard 3–5g daily maintenance dose, taken consistently, reliably improves performance in short-duration, high-intensity exercise. Loading phases (20g/day for 5–7 days) accelerate muscle saturation but aren't necessary — maintenance dosing reaches saturation in 3–4 weeks.
Emerging research on cognitive applications (working memory, sleep deprivation resilience) is promising but less mature than the athletic-performance literature; cognitive studies often use higher doses (5–10g/day).
Creatine is safe for healthy adults. Concerns about kidney function in healthy users have been repeatedly disproven in controlled trials.
