Saw Palmetto is an extract from the berries of a small palm tree. It's most commonly taken for prostate symptoms (frequent urination, waking up at night to pee) in older men, and sometimes for hair loss. The honest picture on prostate symptoms isn't great. The largest and most rigorous review to date — a 2023 Cochrane analysis of 27 studies and 4,656 men — found little to no benefit over placebo. Earlier smaller studies looked more positive, but the bigger, better-designed trials haven't replicated those results. Evidence for hair loss is more limited but somewhat promising, though effects appear weaker than prescription options like finasteride. Most research-grade products are standardized to 85–95% fatty acids (the thought-to-be active components) at a dose of 320mg per day. Labels reviewed for this update included plain powder, whole-herb capsules, 45% fatty-acid extract language, and products advertising a large herb-equivalent number while the actual blend amount was smaller.
Monthly cost moves with form, serving count, and whether the product is a plain saw palmetto powder/capsule or a liquid, gummy, softgel, or prostate-support blend. The cheapest rows can be basic powders, while convenience formats and low-serving bottles can move much higher.
